I have a passion to help people learn how to 'Stand Strong and Prevent Falls'. There is a lot one can do to help prevent falling. Once a fall occurs and bones are broken or surgery is needed, it is hard to go back to how strong and independent you once were. This is especially true if there is also osteoporosis present. According to the Center for Disease Control, more than 1/3 of adults 65 and older fall each year in the USA and need medical attention. Falls are the leading cause of injury related deaths.
There are many things that can lead to falls: Weakness and frailty, vision defects, arthritis, stiffness of joints, heart problems, medication side effects, cluttered envirnoment, etc. There are many preventatitve steps one can take to assess the environment and make little changes to reduce the risk of falls. You can also have your doctor look over your list of medications and be sure there are no harmful interactions that may make you more prone to a fall. Also attending a physical therapy session can assess your muscles and joints for strength and range of motion. You may find that there are some very simple adjustments we can make in your posture, stretching and strengthening of a few key muscle groups that could significantly help you improve your balance and reduce your risk of falling.
This Wednesday evening we are hosting Dr. Sam Datta, who will be talking about Osteoporosis and its relationship to falls. I will also be joining him and talking about falls and how best to prevent them. Please join us in our office Wednesday, June 15 at 6:30 pm. Call us at 545-1010 to register and save your seat. We look forward to seeing you there.
